The external motor is designed to fit on the outside wall of a house where ceiling space is minimal. The diagram below shows how the motor can be mounted when the only solution is to route the ducting horizontally i.e. multiple storey flats, town houses and commercial buildings.

With the motor mounted on the exterior wall it reduces the noise on the inside when operated on full power whilst retaining the flow rate and sunction above the cooker.
